What is it?

This bright yellow hue spice steeped in ancient Middle Eastern and Southeast Asia food, society and medicinal history. Knows for its many healing properties turmeric has become popular in keeping individuals strong and healthy.

A tablespoon of ground turmeric offers 29 calories, nearly a gram of protein, 2 grams of fiber and 6 grams of carbohydrates. It contains minerals such as manganese, phosphorus and potassium. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammation both inside and out. Uses include cancer prevention and treatment as well as treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and infections.

Curcumin, a substance in turmeric, is being researched fr cancer prevention and treatment, and shows promise in animal studies. Stick to fresh or dried and powdered version until more research is conducted and we better understand the use of supplements.

In the Western world turmeric was embraced as a fabric dye. Late to adopt, we are just studying turmeric for its role in prevention, management and treatment of cystic fibrosis and various cardiovascular and neurological disease (such as Alzheimers).

It may seem counterintuitive, but turmeric makes a great anti-acne cleanser and face wash. (Inflammation reducer, remember?) It’s also believed to reduce the growth of unwanted facial hair.

  1. Fresh Turmeric Root – You can find fresh organic turmeric root in the produce section in natural food stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts (some conventional grocery stores carry it too). This is the best form when adding turmeric to fresh pressed juice.

  2. Ground Turmeric – Found in the spice aisle at almost every grocery store. This is the best form for seasoning vegetables and meals. Just make sure that you choose organic, because many conventional spices are irradiated and grown with synthetic pesticides.

  3. Turmeric Supplements – This is the easiest sure-fire way to make sure you get the turmeric in your diet daily.
